MEDIA ADVISORY/INVITATION

Mobile Outreach Vehicle Providing Addiction Services Launches in Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office hosts kickoff event August 16 @1 PM

The office of Atlantic County Sheriff Eric Scheffler, together with the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Foundation Inc. and several partner agencies are responding to Atlantic County’s need for accessible addiction services by launching Hope One Atlantic County, a mobile response unit that will offer critical support for people struggling with addiction. This will be the first mobile unit launched in the county.

The Hope One initiative is being launched through the efforts of Sheriff Eric Scheffler to combat the heroin epidemic in Atlantic County. A recent report found that deaths from drug overdoses in Atlantic County more than doubled from 2016 to 2017 – the worst rate in the state.

The mobile outreach unit will travel into Atlantic County communities with a high rate of drug overdoses, offering individualized treatment for those suffering from addiction. Based on a successful Hope One model launched in Monmouth County, the Atlantic County unit’s mobile staff will include a sheriff’s officer, a licensed clinician and a certified peer recovery who understand the needs of those suffering with addiction and who can triage individuals in crisis. The mobile outreach unit will be equipped with Narcan kits, and staff can make referrals to nearby treatment centers.

Representatives from partner agencies will be on the mobile outreach unit to provide onboarding, intakes, assist with Medicare applications and more. The project is managed by Tim Reed, retired police chief of Brigantine and now Chief Warrant Officer of the Atlantic County Sheriff's Office.
